black lives matter murals
Client: Multiple Minneapolis Small Businesses
Role: Art Direction, Mural Painting
Year: 2020
In 2018 I co-founded the Twin Cities based lettering group, Sota Letters Co. During the social unrest in the summer of 2020, many were looking for ways to help the countless businesses affected by the unsettling events. I helped facilitate the collaboration of our group, with over a dozen local BIPOC businesses, painting meaningful art in a community that was being held together with the kindness of strangers. With over 50 volunteers of varying skill levels, we were able to execute ten murals in 5 days! With that, we also had a call for donations for supplies and donated the surplus to local non-profit Juxtaposition Arts, which provides creative opportunities for BIPOC youth.
The murals featured here were art directed by Emmi and executed by a team of volunteers of varying skill levels.
As businesses started to unshutter their windows, we were contacted by the founder of Art Against Racism, who wanted to feature our works in their virtual exhibition;
Art Against Racism: Memorial. Monument. Movement. A growing historic collection of images and videos connected by their urgent response to injustice, inequality and the call for a better world. There, they dedicated an entire gallery to our collection of murals.
